Arrowroot Powder

Where to buy: Available on Amazon and various retail grocery stores like Shop Rite.

Nutritional value: Arrowroot powder is a great alternative to corn starch. It is used to thicken soups, stews, gravies, etc. It is much healthier than corn starch – it’s non-GMO, vegan, gluten free, paleo friendly, and grain free so it digests easily and contains more fiber than potatoes and other starches. It also has potassium, iron, and B vitamins. I use it for select baking recipes too (gives cookies the perfect soft chew!). It can be used as an egg replacer as well – whisk together 1 tbsp arrowroot powder with 1 tbsp vegetable oil and 1/4th cup water to equal one egg. Arrowroot powder is excellent for air frying and baking/roasting things because the result is CRUNCHY & CRISPY! It really might be one of my new favorite ingredients.

How to eat: See above, so versatile in cooking.

Where I’ve used it:  Eggplant Parmesan Stacks

Raw Shelled Hemp Seeds

Where to buy: Trader Joe’s or Manitoba Harvest is a great brand.

Nutritional value: Exceptionally nutritious and rich in healthy fats (omega-6 and omega-3), protein, and various minerals. They have a mild, nutty flavor and are often referred to as hemp hearts.

How to eat: Hemp seeds are a GREAT addition of plant based protein for vegetarians. Sprinkle them on top of cooked oatmeal, yogurt, and salads or toss them into smoothies and protein shakes. I bake them into muffins/breads and other healthy treats as well. I also love slathering up a piece of sprouted bread with peanut butter and topping the toast with hemp seeds.

Where I’ve used it:  Yogurt Parfait & Cheesy Eggs

Crispbread Crackers

Where to buy: Fairway, Trader Joe’s. My personal favorite are the “Seeds & Grains Crispbread Norwegian Crackers” from Trader Joe’s.

Nutritional value: Chock full of sunflower & sesame seeds, rye, oats, and flax. One cracker contains only 7 grams of net carbs, 3 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein.

How to eat: I use these perfectly crunchy, savory crackers as a substitute for toast. Mostly love using these as a bed for my cheesy eggs. Can also use for smashed avo/egg toast or spread with cream cheese and jam or nut butters. Work great as crackers for hummus or other dips.

Vans Gluten Free Waffles

Where to buy: Fairway or check out their website to look for locations.

Nutritional value: Clean and wholesome ingredients!

How to eat: I love their Blueberry, Apple Cinnamon, and Belgium Homestyle waffles. My favorite is to slather with peanut butter, sprinkle organic cinnamon on top (I use Simply Organic brand), and drizzle with some agave, honey, or organic maple syrup.

Love Grown Cereal

Where to buy: Fairway or check out their website to look for locations.

Nutritional value: This cereal is made from a mix of navy, lentil, and garbanzo (chickpea) beans. They contain real cocoa and provide the perfect crunchy bite.

How to eat: My favorite are the Chocolate Power O’s! I go through a box every week, and normally I am NOT a cereal person. I love having a bowl with unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I can’t say enough good things about this cereal, it always satisfies my sweet tooth craving!
